Why Real-World MPG Matters

Official fuel economy figures quoted by manufacturers are measured under standardised laboratory conditions using the WLTP cycle. While more realistic than the older NEDC test, these figures still tend to overstate what most drivers will achieve in everyday conditions by 10 to 20 per cent. Urban driving with frequent stopping and starting produces significantly worse economy than steady motorway cruising, and short journeys where the engine never fully warms up are particularly inefficient.

Tracking your actual MPG over multiple fill-ups builds a reliable picture of your car’s true efficiency. If you notice a sustained drop in economy, it could indicate issues such as underinflated tyres, a dirty air filter, failing spark plugs or a more serious engine problem that warrants investigation by a mechanic. Catching these issues early can prevent more expensive repairs later.

Tips to Improve Your MPG

The single biggest factor in fuel economy is driving style. Smooth acceleration, gentle braking and maintaining a steady speed can improve your MPG by 15 to 20 per cent compared to aggressive driving. Use the highest gear appropriate for your speed and avoid excessive engine revving. On motorways, reducing your speed from 70 to 60 miles per hour can improve fuel economy by up to 15 per cent, though this needs to be balanced with journey time considerations.

Vehicle maintenance plays an important role too. Keep tyres inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, as even slightly underinflated tyres increase fuel consumption. Regular servicing ensures the engine runs efficiently, and replacing a clogged air filter can noticeably improve both performance and economy. Remove any unnecessary weight from the vehicle and take off roof racks, bars and boxes when they are not needed, as these significantly increase aerodynamic drag.

Understanding UK vs US Gallons

The UK uses imperial gallons, which are approximately 20 per cent larger than US gallons. This means a car achieving 40 MPG in UK measurements would show approximately 33 MPG using US gallons. When comparing fuel economy figures from international sources, always check which gallon measurement is being used.
