How Age Is Calculated
Age calculation seems simple but involves subtle complexities, particularly around leap years and varying month lengths. Our calculator determines the exact number of complete years, months and days between the date of birth and today’s date. A person born on 29 February in a leap year has their birthday counted on 28 February in non-leap years for legal purposes in England and Wales, though socially many choose to celebrate on 1 March.
The calculator also converts your total age into different units: total days lived, total weeks, total months and even hours and minutes for the mathematically curious. These figures can be surprisingly eye-opening. The average life expectancy in the UK is approximately 81 years, which translates to roughly 29,500 days. Knowing how many of those days you have already lived puts time into a tangible perspective that years alone do not convey.
Age Requirements in the UK
Many UK services and activities have specific age requirements. You must be 17 to drive a car, 18 to buy alcohol, vote in general elections and get a tattoo, and 16 to get married with parental consent or join the armed forces. The State Pension age is currently 66 and is scheduled to rise to 67 between 2026 and 2028, then to 68 in subsequent years. Some age thresholds have changed over time, so checking the current requirements for your specific situation is always worthwhile.
For travel purposes, age is calculated from the date of birth to the date of travel, not the booking date. Airlines and holiday companies use the age at the time of the flight or holiday to determine child, infant or adult pricing. Passport validity requirements vary by destination, with many countries requiring at least six months validity remaining from the date of entry, making it important to check well before booking.
Milestone Birthdays and Celebrations
Certain birthdays carry particular significance in UK culture and law. Turning 16 brings eligibility for a National Insurance number and the right to work full time. At 18, you gain full adult legal status. The 21st birthday has traditionally been celebrated with a key to symbolise adulthood, though 18 is now the legal milestone. Subsequent milestone birthdays at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and beyond are widely celebrated, and reaching 100 earns a congratulatory message from the reigning monarch.
